Blue: Ways To Live Better

We are all looking for ways to better ourselves and improve our quality of life. Here are three important life lessons that I have learned from someone who is very special to me.

Treat your time as your most precious asset.

“The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time.” Time is our most precious asset and one thing that makes enjoying it so challenging is that we don’t know how much time we have left. We examine ourselves and wonder if we are too selfish with how we spend our time. If you had only one year to live, what changes would you make? Would you spend more time with your family? Sometimes life’s greatest pleasures are the hobbies that we have and the relationships that we create. For some of us, spending time with friends and family, playing sports, listening to music, working out, etc. is as good as it gets. Treat your time as your most precious asset. I believe that being selfish is not a bad thing as long as you are not hurting anyone.

Try to be more aware of the present moments of your life.

There is a book entitled “The Precious Present.” It explains that the “precious present” is the gift of making one aware of just how precious the present moments of our lives are. With all of the noise that is around us most the time it is difficult and challenging to be present. Thinking about the past or planning for the future are huge distractions when trying to be present.
While it is a challenge for all of us, there are some things that help one be present. The most important piece of advice is actually listening when someone is talking. Being a good listener is a special trait. Many of us listen “with our motor running.” We are thinking about how we will respond, rather than actually listening to what the person who is talking is saying. Those people who are good listeners are able to be present more often than others. Listening and being present are constant challenges that we all face. Try to be more aware of the present moments of your lives.

Be open to change.

Be open to change. We are all creatures of habit and we find it difficult to change our ways. Some people never do, saying things like, “We always do this”, or, “We never do that.” Always and never are two words that should be eliminated from our vocabulary. Getting out of our comfort zones can be exhilarating if we can conquer our fear of change. An example of this is risk taking.
Some people believe that avoiding risks is a good thing. Choose accounting, not Wall Street. Sit at the $5 blackjack table to limit losses. Many people become planners early in life, believing that having control of events is the best way to minimize negative surprises.
Risk taking can be fun. It does not have to be a negative trait. It can be positive when it provides life with excitement and a chance to grow. I believe that there are times when taking risks may be appropriate and fulfill ones expectations. We regret in life what we didn't do, not what we did.

Other ways to improve your life:

Don’t carry bad feelings inside, talk about them as soon as possible. You will feel better sooner.
Trust is the most important part of any relationship. Once this is violated, it is very difficult to restore.
Be nice and kind, especially to those who you love. Ways to be nice include how you talk to someone, expressions of appreciation and gratitude, and showing loyalty when it is appropriate.
Friends are among the most treasured assets in life. Real friendship is priceless. Be aware of this and let your good friends know how you feel about them.
Love is the only road. Shower the people who you love with love. There is no better feeling than being loved and someone knowing that you love them.
